The New Zealand-based creator uses perfect color palettes and just the right amount of abstraction and grittiness to make these character <a href="http://design.org/illustration" target="illustrations">illustrations</a> feel more like fine art pieces. </p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="620" height="797" title="Design, JamesReid, polygon" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/02/17/jamesreid_polygon_04.jpg?1329542705" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-images"> <div class="field-label">Images:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="797" title="Design, JamesReid, polygon" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/02/17/jamesreid_polygon_01.jpg?1329542785" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="797" title="Design, JamesReid, polygon" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/02/17/jamesreid_polygon_02.jpg?1329542786" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="797" title="Design, JamesReid, polygon" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/02/17/jamesreid_polygon_03.jpg?1329542786" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="798" title="Design, JamesReid, polygon" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/02/17/jamesreid_polygon_05.jpg?1329542786" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="797" title="Design, JamesReid, polygon" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/02/17/jamesreid_polygon_08.jpg?1329542787" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="798" title="Design, JamesReid, polygon" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/02/17/jamesreid_polygon_06.jpg?1329542787" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="797" title="Design, JamesReid, polygon" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/02/17/jamesreid_polygon_07.jpg?1329542787" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-featured"> <div class="field-label">Featured:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not Featured </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://design.org/blog/polygon-heroes-cubist-illustrations-james-reid" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://design.org/blog/polygon-heroes-cubist-illustrations-james-reid#comments comic design geometric illustration superhero Sat, 18 Feb 2012 05:29:07 +0000 jessicapatterson 4110 at http://design.org DC Comics Unmasks New Logo and Identity http://design.org/blog/dc-comics-unmasks-new-logo-and-identity <p>DC Comics has unveiled a new identity, which—as is often the case with logo overhauls—has met it's fair share of criticism and praise. For fans and casual consumers alike, there's a lot of emotion tied to the former logo's association with so many wonderful stories. When you break that emotional bond, people feel strange. DC's '76 mark was a classic, the '05 remix was a departure but also ushered in a raft of DC-certified movies. Here in '12 we have a clean break from the past. I felt this way when UPS updated their logo.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_01.jpg?1327459268" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-images"> <div class="field-label">Images:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_02.jpg?1327459473" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_03.jpg?1327459473" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_04.jpg?1327459473" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_05.jpg?1327459474" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_06.jpg?1327459474" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_07.jpg?1327459474" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_08.jpg?1327459474" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_10.jpg?1327459474" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_12.jpg?1327459474" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_14.jpg?1327459474" /> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="401" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_13.jpg?1327459474" /> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_images" width="620" height="324" title="Design, DC, logo" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2012/01/24/dc_comics_11.jpg?1327459475" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-featured"> <div class="field-label">Featured:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not Featured </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://design.org/blog/dc-comics-unmasks-new-logo-and-identity" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://design.org/blog/dc-comics-unmasks-new-logo-and-identity#comments brand comic design graphic identity logo superhero Wed, 25 Jan 2012 03:12:13 +0000 wardandrews 4048 at http://design.org Digital Superhero Paintings by Arian Noveir http://design.org/blog/digital-superhero-paintings-arian-noveir <p><a href="http://arian-noveir.tumblr.com" target="Arian Noveir">Arian Noveir</a>, a web designer, photographer and illustrator in France, created these digital paintings / portraits of certain superhero alter egos. Clever words, clever use of negative space, and clever withholding of information. Often Nolan's posters feature an intriguing image, and you have to search for the title. Nolan's Batmans have always been shrouded in secrecy—from rumored villains and plot-lines to guerrilla-style campaigns, they keep us wondering and waiting to see what will be next, and the strategy works.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="620" height="917" title="Design, darkknight, poster" alt="" src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/blog/2011/07/12/thedarknight_poster.jpg?1310511772" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-featured"> <div class="field-label">Featured:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not Featured </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://design.org/blog/next-batman-dark-knight-rises-poster" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://design.org/blog/next-batman-dark-knight-rises-poster#comments comic design graphic Movie poster superhero Tue, 12 Jul 2011 23:05:21 +0000 jessicapatterson 3065 at http://design.org Superhero Asterisk Designs by Filip Łysyszyn http://design.org/blog/superhero-asterisk-designs-filip-%C5%82ysyszyn <p><img src="http://design.org/sites/default/files/imagecache/blog-full-scale/blog/2011/05/13/heros_lysyszyn_.gif" alt="Design, hero, lysyszyn" title="Design, hero, lysyszyn" class="imagecache-blog-full-scale" /></p> <p><a href="http://filip.lysyszyn.pl/" target="Filip Łysyszyn">Filip Łysyszyn</a>, a designer in Poland, created these <a href="http://design.org/typography" target="typography">typography</a>-based Superhero icons.
