An Apple A Day: Calendar Design

This unique calendar is credited to Serviceplan for AOK healthcare (though I couldn't find it on on their site). It's a fun concept... each day you remove and presumably eat an apple, and the new date is revealed at the top of the tube.

My question is, who wants to eat the apples toward the end of the month, and has anyone considered the possibility of a fruit fly farm? It would be more functional as a showcase to the idea of "an apple a day" with artificial apples. Or it could be implemented in other environments with different objects. For now, it's only in AOK offices and is designed to encourage healthy habits. One alternative would be to replace the apples with balls that have daily health tips. What do you guys/gals think?
