Cleveland Cavaliers: A 3D Mapped Court Display

On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the Cleveland Cavaliers retired the jersey of Zydrunas Ilgauskas. In honor of the retired center, Quince Imaging and Think Media teamed up with the Cavs to produce a one-of-a-kind projection display event.

Using a combination of 3D mapping techniques paired with images and video, the court's surface and surrounding screens were transformed into an "immersive video environment."

Instead of merely overlaying the existing court graphics, the video and imaging designers incorporated the logo, lines and divisions of the Quicken Loans Arena floor into the presentation. Sections drop in and out convincingly and interact with type, video and image elements. The sound effects are snappy and support the designed effects well, while the video clips display amazingly clear and transition seamlessly.

Sixteen HD projectors drove the display system and created a vivid pixel space of 3600 x 1878. Fans could participate and react to the display by live tweeting their thoughts on two large 16' x 28' projection screens mounted at the top of the stadium.
