Daily Type Drawings from Jay Roeder

Jay Roeder wrote over to share some of his work, and his hand-drawn typography rocks! He adds a drawing a day and most are centered around some sort of quote or idea.

I asked him if he had any specific influences that drive his work and where he finds his inspiration.

Jay says, "I think the better question would be: what doesn’t inspire me?"

"First and foremost, music is extremely inspirational in terms of my content. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t see something, or hear something that inspires me. I have this list in my iPhone of never ending thoughts and phrases that I plan to draw – all inspired by my every day life."

"I love describing my style as embraced imperfection. Being a perfectionist, I’ve always wanted everything to be perfect, and it wasn’t until I decided to embrace imperfection that my hand lettering started to take on character and interest. There are also many great hand lettering artists out there who I have studied to give myself a solid foundation."

Definitely a great lesson to learn—there is interest in imperfection, and just as much craft as there is in "perfection." And putting in the time and effort to learn and grow definitely translates in ones work.

Jay also includes an entertaining Biggy Smalls “Juicy” collection as part of his weekly routine, completing one section of lyrics every Friday until the song is complete.
