The Design and Layout of Film Mag Little White Lies

If you like reading about film or looking at well-designed magazines, take a stroll over to Little White Lies. Their issues are full of great editorial illustration and photography and lots of hand-drawn/cut/painted typography. And the covers are especially vivid:

The London-based magazine is an independent bi-monthly publication covering movies through "cutting edge writing, illustration and photography to get under the skin of cinema."

Unlike many magazines, LWLies does not have a specific style assigned to each layout or department, instead they have a predictable content collection with each issues style revolving around a theme, usually related to a specific movie. See what I mean below...

The layouts in the magazine vary from retro to modern, innovative to classic, art-house to neat-freak, and they manage to pull it off without creating a jarring experience, since each issues "feel" is consistant throughout.

Though I'd love to flip through a physical copy of LWLies, their digital editions are top-notch. I imagine they'd be fun to browse on a tablet (you'll have to let me know). They're sprinkled with easter eggs, easy to access content and the reviews are hooked up with quick links to see the trailers. Also browse editions of the magazine for fun details, like changing page number icons, staff badges, introductions, and more.

One of my favorite elements is the quote splash page just inside the front cover.

You can also buy prints of their covers at their online shop if you fall in love with any of them. I wouldn't mind purchasing a print of their logo either.

"Because movies don’t exist in a vacuum, we venture beyond the boundaries of the big screen, exploring the worlds of music, art, politics and pop culture to inform and illuminate the medium we love." -LWLies
