Dodoplan: Modern Decorations from Traditional Design

Dodoplan, a trio of designers, created this holiday display for the Stary Browar Art and Business Centre in Poznan, Poland.

They were inspired by traditional Polish decorations called "PAJAKI," or Spiders. In an effort to create something more meaningful than today's mass-produced, plastic, disposable Christmas decorations, they recreated the shape of the Spiders in a modern form.

Polish folk-artists crafted the 550 elements by hand, and a workshop complimenting the project taught Poznan residents how to craft some of the traditional decorations. They also hosted an exhibition highlighting the rich history and cultural significance of the Spiders and decor project.

This marked the first time Poland has seen handicrafts used on such a large scale. Dodoplan showed "that traditional techniques, when appropriately chosen, can be very compelling. The project highlights the intangible value of sharing time with relatives and fostering cultural identity."
