Karin Stack: Hair Stories Photography and Recovering from Chemo

"Not without humor, these life-size photographic self-portraits follow my progress from bald to hairy."

Karin Stack photographed her hair as it grew back after chemotherapy following her 1998 cancer diagnosis. The photo collection is beautiful and graphically interesting, and the story and meaning make the images more powerful.

She created flip books from the images that pair up points of hair growth with text and voice recordings of personal and pivotal moments throughout the course of her treatment. The images were produced by scanning 35 mm negatives and digitally printing them, allowing her to control the format and keep a constant layout, effectively combining photography and graphic design.

From the artist's statement: "From the chaotic realm of illness and uncertainty, I produced a post-chemotherapy chronicle of hair growth through weekly photographs. The ordered structure of the installation, which takes the form of several horizontal timelines, challenges the disorder confronted."
