Meticulous Gem Paintings by Carly Waito

When I first saw the work of Carly Waito, I thought I was looking at meticulously lit and photographed gems. The colors and reflections are beautiful, and the whole piece works to highlight the unique characteristics of each specimen. Needless to say, when I learned her mineral portraits were actually oil paintings, I was blown away.

These are absolutely stunning. Take a look!

I read that, to begin creating her paintings, she carefully selects, lights and photographs her gems, and it amazes me how literally that translates to the work.
