A New Airstream Project from Matthew Hofmann: The Santa Barbara Auto Camp

A few years ago Matthew Hofmann of Hofmann Architecture popped up on our design radar with his burgeoning business remodling vintage Airstreams with modern interiors. Since then, his beautifully redesigned Airstreams have become so popular that he stepped away from architecture to make the trailers his full-time focus.

Now he's taking another leap into the world of mobile living—in January, he opened Santa Barbara Auto Camp, with five uniquely restored trailers welcoming guests for reserved stays. The trailers are completely renovated with modern furnishings and amenities including bathrooms, cooking capabilities and entertainment.

In the heart of Santa Barbara, the Airstream Camp provides a novel yet refined alternative for visitors and locals alike to step out and experience a new way to overnight and travel. The Auto Camp has been in constant operation since 1922, seeing quite a spectrum of travelers and vehicles over the years. Now the camp houses the mid-century Airstreams instead of transient trailers but remains a place to experience passing through the heart of the city. I love the unexpectedly light, open and modern interiors , with each trailer having its own unique personality—a welcomed alternative to the standard hotel.
