Rubikcubism: Cube Art and Thread Spool Portraits

This first set of cube artworks are from the French artist Invader, who also created the Space Invaders Project. Invader is thought to be the origin of the rubik's cube art movement.

The aim of the Space Invader Project is to invade cities around the world with tiled mosaic space invaders, like the one below.

And he created maps of the invasions.

Another group has also set out to tackle the cube artistically. Cube Works is "a collaboration of graphic artists whose goal is to re-contextualize common objects to create complex, high-quality pieces of functional art."

Cube Works also uses thread, dice and mixed media to create portraits and scenes.

The Last Supper was cubed over 2 months with 5 people. The recreation took 4,050 cubes and measures 8.5' x 17,' and it was entered in to the Guinness Book of World Records.

If you're having trouble seeing the images, step back from your screen and experience the glory of geeky pointillism.
