The Shrine / An Argument: An Animated and Charactered Fleet Foxes Music Video

I'm a sucker for an epic story. (Consult my bookcase if you have any doubts—it's chockablock with series by Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin.) That's probably why I'm so enamored by the newest Fleet Foxes music video for "The Shrine / An Argument", an eight-minute long journey through a surreal land filled with bizarre beasts.

This standout animation comes from the minds of Sean Pecknold, brother of Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold, and Britta Johnson. We owe Stacey Rozich our thanks for the superb character design. This neo-psychedelic stop motion animation uses puppets based on Rozich's art.

The video follows the trials and tribulations of a lonely antlered creature in a bleak and haunting world—parts of which remind me of a much darker version of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. And the song and animation mesh together beautifully, in an almost Peter and the Wolf style.

Oh, and animal lovers be warned: This tale echoes the cruel realities of the circle of life. I admit I even felt a little sad at the ending... even though they're just puppets.
