Storied Sips: Intriguing Cocktail Tales and Collages

In need of some cocktail inspiration for your New Year's bash or perhaps a party icebreaker or conversation starter? Storied Sips by Erica Duecy will help you simultaneously whip up a bevy of classic beverages and brush up on your libations history. The book examines the origins and stories of 40 celebrated cocktails and pairs them with step-by-step recipes and lovely collages. It also includes sections on appropriate barware, glassware and ingredients so you can build the perfect apéritif from the glass, up.

Each cocktail features a whimsical and narrative illustration set composed of vintage papers, ads, maps, stamps and other ephemera. The playful collages, created by Los Angeles-based designer Poul Lange, enrich the sip-able stories with witty compilations or literal visuals.

In an interview with Print Mag, Lange says "the subject matter lends itself perfectly to [collages]. A cocktail is a collection of ingredients that blend, contrast, compliment and enhance each other as they mix—just as the parts of a good collage should. Also, the golden ages of mixology produced such an abundance of beautiful graphics (many of them applied to liquor labels), that this subject almost begged for collage illustrations."

The tales themselves are equal parts entertaining and interesting, transporting the reader to the parlors, hotels, verandas and speakeasies from which these storied drinks hail. The collection of cocktails spans some 200 years across Europe to the far east and beyond, "from the Mojito's pirate legacy to the Margarita's old Hollywood tales."

Available at a variety of retailers.
