Student Spotlight: Design by Conor Whelan

Conor Whelan is a visual communication student going into his final year in the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, and his portfolio already contains some impressive and creative design projects.

Conor answered a few questions for us about his creative practices...
DDO: What do you do to stay ahead of the curve as a student setting out into the design world?
Conor: I try to observe everything I can, and I get really excited whenever I see good design - be it interesting food packaging in a supermarket, or beautiful film titles, or a well-planned concert programme. I try to absorb all that good design and produce something to the same standard in my own work. I try not to strictly follow trends, but instead look for inspiration in film, music, and reading.

DDO: What do you hope to do when you're done with school?
Conor: I’d like to spend a few years in different cities around the world working as a designer, getting as much experience as I can. The city of Montreal really appeals to me and I’d love to work there at some stage.

DDO: Do you have a permanent workspace, or are you working the way of the transient student?
Conor: I’ve actually just cleaned out my desk in college for the year, so at the moment anywhere will do!

DDO: Any design habits you have that you find instrumental to creation?
Conor: I find it’s really useful to have a little notebook wherever I go, because often I get ideas while on the bus or while walking somewhere, and it’s important to jot them down before they disappear!
