The Surf Shack: A Modern Beach Retreat from an Old Shipping Container

Design, surfshack, kable

Hartman Kable created the Surf Shack as a place to crash during his weekend retreats to surf the Washington Coast (which can be a bit cold and breezy to camp).

He purchased an 8x20 foot shipping container, left the outside intact, maintaining the weather- and tamper-proof integrity of the container, and turned the interior into a sort of collapsable apartment with the comforts of home. He also utilized recycled materials when possible, including the doors and windows that now let light stream through the space—he salvaged them from a shopping mall, and the decking is constructed from wood he found in the trash.

The concept reminds me of the Hong Kong Efficiency Apartment, with the way the tables, bed, couch, shower, shelves and other panels tuck away neatly to fully utilize the space.

I also wanted to share a shot of the clever UI on Hartman's webpage. The navigation is nestled into boxes that lift open when clicked, like the shelves in the shack. The sci-fi-esque simplicity and sparse white scheme with red LED numbers also harken the style of the getaway, which was inspired by George Lucas.

ReadyMade also shared a how-to on creating a fold-away table like Hartman's.
