The Traveling Sketchbook Project: Thousands of Artists' Books Hit the Road
The Art House Co-op is an "independent, Brooklyn-based company that organizes global, collaborative art projects." Each year they gather thousands of creative people to amass The Sketchbook Project. The crowd-sourced project is a traveling and interactive library displaying unique artists' journals, representing more than 130 countries over the course of the project. This year's collection includes almost 7,500 unique sketchbooks hailing from 88 countries.
The travelling exhibit gives artists of all backgrounds the opportunity to have their work seen and celebrated. While very few artists actually get the chance to display their works in a gallery or exhibition space, the Project accepts artist submissions of all genres and, unlike expensive gallery showings or time-intensive shows or pitches, the traveling collection can give a sense of fulfillment to artists with other obligations.
The Co-op schleps thousands of sketchbooks across the country, exhibiting the burgeoning collection free of charge at stops along the way. Each year they accept contributions to the collection through a paid sign-up, in which artists receive a blank sketchbook and inclusion in the library. Artists can choose to opt in for inclusion in the digital library. The submissions are "cataloged in the Brooklyn Art Library's permanent collection, displayed online in the Digital Library and exhibited at art spaces from coast to coast." The current collection holds more than 18,000 artists' books.
