  • When I first saw the work of Carly Waito, I thought I was looking at meticulously lit and photographed gems. The colors and reflections are beautiful, and the whole piece works to highlight the unique characteristics of each specimen. Needless to say, when I learned her mineral portraits were actually oil paintings, I was blown away.

  • Using a mixture of acrylics, oils, sprays and pencils, Lou Ros's work is an elegant combination of fine art and graffiti elements. The 26-year-old French artist began doing street art with his friends at 17 and later transitioned to painting murals and other works.

    He became bored of the structure, repetition and perfection and took a decidedly more forceful approach to art, resulting in these portraits that are ripe with emotion and intensity. My favorites are his snapshot-like works from his faces and portraits series.

  • Artist Hardware, a group who usually designs products for other companies, has decided to develop a project of their own. They're using Kickstarter to fund the production of the Sensu Brush, a true artist's brush for the iPad.

    And since the iPad is portable, the brush should be too, right? They designed the handle for dual function—to reverse as a cover with a stylus on the end. See the promo video below.

  • In 1965 at age 34 Roman Opalka began transcribing numbers, beginning at one and progressing to infinity. These "Details" are each painted on a 196 x 135 cm canvas, with numbers continuing onto a new canvas each time one fills.

    Beginning in 1972, he began whitening each canvas background by 1%, until he finally reached a fully white canvas in 2008, when he began painting white on white, or "blanc mérité" (white well earned).
